Outlook Takes Timid Step Into Social Networking

Microsoft has forged deals with LinkedIn, MySpace and Facebook to connect their networks through its popular email and personal information manager, Outlook. The company introduced Outlook Social Connector when it rolled out a beta of Microsoft Office 2010 last November. The OSC connects emails, contact information and networking sites within the Outlook application.

FCC chief proposes new Net neutrality rules

As expected, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski on Monday outlined a plan to keep the Internet open.

In a speech given at the Brookings Institute, Genachowski proposed that the FCC turn its four principles of network openness official into regulation. And he suggested that the FCC add two more “principles” as part of these new rules.

Democrats give Net neutrality a boost

Thursday, Chairman of the House Energy & Commerce Committee Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) added himself as a co-sponsor to the Net neutrality bill.

The Net neutrality bill was introduced by Rep. Ed Markey (D – Mass.) and Anna Eshoo (D – Calif.) on July 31st, 2009. The purpose of the bill is to establish overarching national broadband policy and ensures an open and consumer oriented Internet.

The House Energy & Commerce Committee oversees the Federal Communications Commission. Waxman said during a hearing for the subcommittee Thursday that it was time to make sure rules were imposed to keep the Internet open.

“Industry will benefit from clarity, consistency, and predictability with regard to Net neutrality,” Waxman said at the hearing. “I think that the time is right to formally establish, through legislation if required, the rules of the road with respect to Net neutrality.”
